Aircraft Systems Maintenance Personnel

The Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system supplements the enlisted rating structure in identifying personnel on active or inactive duty and billets in manpower authorizations. NEC codes identify a non-rating wide skill, knowledge, aptitude, or qualification that must be documented to identify both people and billets for management purposes. For example, if a Navy police officer (MA --Master at Arms) receives specialized training as a K-9 Dog Handler, he/she would be awarded NEC MA-2005. From that point on, the sailor could be assigned to Navy law enforcement duties involving military working dogs.

Aircraft Maintenance Department NECs

The aircraft maintenance department is typically the largest department in most operating units or Naval Support Activities. As with any Naval Support Activity, the primary goal of this community is to support the air operations missions. Being Full Mission Capable (FMC) is the main goal of the maintenance department with all assigned aircraft. In order to be FMC, an aircraft must safely perform all of its intended missions and return to its base of operations. 

No matter the rating in this NEC, the work centers are very similar and operate identically. All commands of aircraft maintenance departments have the same basic organization and it is standard throughout the Navy. This means for the members of the command, the supply numbers, department organization and preventive maintenance system (PMS) is also standard. So, if you come from another aviation maintenance activity, you can perform in the new unit in a short time. You do not need a long indoctrination or break-in period.
